The finite-mass correction to the soft-pion limit is discussed on the example of the pion-nucleus charge-exchange amplitude. We show that the main deviation from the soft-pion limit is the distorsion of the pion wave by the nucleus, which insures unitarity. If the pion-nucleus interaction can be represented by an equivalent optical potential, the soft-pion limit is the Born approximation. The composite structure of the nucleus is responsible for smaller deviations. Experiments support this picture. © 1969.
