Radiation dose rate is an important factor in clinical radiotherapy; but the relevance of dose rate in total body irradiation has not been assessed until now. We studied the differential response of mouse bone marrow, to dose rate varying from 45 to 0.83 rad/min. The D0 values for all dose rates fall between 110 and 130 rad but the differences are not significant. The values of extrapolation numbers vary between 1.17 and 1.20 from 45 to 5 rad/min and are smaller than 1 for 1.65 and 0.83 rad/min. The results are of interest for the small doses in the pan-irradiation technique; it will be interesting to know results for dose rates lower than 1 rad/min. © 1979.
