MOLECULAR HYDROGEN INELASTIC ELECTRON IMPACT CROSS SECTIONS - A SEMICLASSICAL METHOD

摘要
Cross sections for ionization and excitation of diatomic molecules by electron impact are calculated using a modification of Gryzinski's semiclassical theory. The theoretical model is described. Specific results are given for molecular hydrogen from the ground state to E(2sσ1Σ+g), B(2pσ1Σ+u), C(2pπ1 Πu), and D(3pπ1Πu) states and for ionization. Calculations were carried out to 360 eV. In addition, some results for the nitrogen molecule are presented. The excitation calculations are compared to Born and Born-Ochkur approximations. This comparison shows that the molecular model presented in this report gives acceptable estimates of cross sections for excitation of ground-state molecular hydrogen. The ionization results for both molecular hydrogen and molecular nitrogen are in good agreement with experimentally obtained cross sections. It was found that better results were obtained for both excitation and ionization by using the average orbital electron energy for the average kinetic energy of the bound electron instead of the ionization potential. © 1969.
