Collisional excitation of K atoms by rare gases and diatomic molecules: Correlation with electronic structure

摘要
Excitation of K* (4(2)P) has been studied as a function of collision energy by measuring K* fluorescence as a fast K beam (25 to 600 eV), produced by charge-exchange of an arcelerated K+ beam, traverses a target gas. Results obtained for the rare gases and for H-2, O-2, N-2, and Cl-2 suggest that the qualitative form of the excitation cross section is governed primarily by the lowest-lying vacant orbital in the target species.
