ADSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF SILICA-CONTAINING MIXED-OXIDE GELS FOR AMINO-ACIDS IN AQUEOUS-SOLUTIONS

The adsorption abilities of silica-containing mixed-oxide gels for amino acids in aqueous solutions have been investigated by means of batch adsorption tests. The following three combinations showed the best results: (1) silica-alumina of molar ratio 1:3 for l-glutamic acid; (2) silica-magnesia of molar ratio 1:1 for glycine; (3) silica-titania of molar ratio 3: 1 for l-lysine. The interaction between the mixed-oxide surface and the amino acid is discussed. The pH of the amino acid solution affected the extent of adsorption in all cases. The surface charge and the cation located on the gel largely determined the adsorption of amino acid except for the neutral amino acid (glycine). Further, the pore-size distribution of the gel was generally changed by the adsorption of the amino acid. © 1990.
