THE ELECTRICAL EFFECTS OF FERMI ENERGY CHANGES IN EUSR2CU2NBO8 AND RELATED PHASES

EuSr2Cu2NbO8 and EuSr2Cu2TaO8, which adopt a structure related to YBa2Cu3O7-x but with octahedral Nb and Ta ions substitutiong for the 4-coordinate Cu(1) ions, contain Cu2+ ions, and are therefore semiconductors. Changes in preparative conditions have been found to have little influence on their electrical behaviour, but partial substitution of Fe and Ti for Nb in EuSr2Cu2NbO8 produces metallic behaviour at around 300K, and a decrease in resistivity by a factor of around 10(4) at 50K.
