摘要
Power engineers are often asked questions about the characteristics of low frequency electric and magnetic fields in the vicinity of power lines. Is it reasonable to use quasi-static theory to calculate these fields? Is it or is it not correct to describe these fields as "radiation?" How can Poyntings theorem be used to address this question? Why are electric and magnetic fields calculated independently when it is known that the fields satisfy the coupled Maxwells equations? Under what conditions is the ratio of the electric and magnetic fields equal to the free space wave impedance? Answers to these commonly asked questions are developed in this paper.
