A STRIKING EFFECT OF SPIN MULTIPLICITY ON THE PHOTOINDUCED ELECTRON-TRANSFER REACTION OF A 1-VINYLNAPHTHALENE-PYROMELLITIC DIANHYDRIDE SYSTEM

摘要
The photochemical reaction of a 1-vinylnaphthalene - pyromellitic dianhydride system is found to show a striking effect of spin multiplicity on the reaction pathway; whereas the radical ion pair generated in the electronically excited singlet state readily undergoes back electron transfer, that produced in the triplet state leads to the formation of a 2:1 adduct. The present study presents an example which suggests the control of back electron transfer by spin multiplicity in the photoinduced electron-transfer reaction.
