Experimental studies of the magnetoelastic properties of the cubic RE Laves phases RNi2 and RCo2 are reviewed. The roles of 3d- and 4f-electrons as origins of isotropic and anisotropic magnetostriction are analyzed. It is shown that the magnetoelastic constants λ111 and λ100 in RNi2 compounds are close to about 10-3 at low temperatures. The large magnetoelastic deformations along 〈1 0 0〉 axes in RCo2 compounds are caused by the d-electron subsystem and have an itinerant nature. Spontaneous magnetovolume anomalies vs. the HR-Co exchange field reflect the metamagnetic character of the magnetization for the d-electron subsystem in pseudobinaries R'xR''1-xCo2. © 1990.
