PHOTOEXCITATION OF LOW-LYING, ISOVECTOR-1+ STATES IN DEFORMED-NUCLEI

Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments have been carried out to investigate low-lying dipole excitations in deformed nuclei, in particular to study the orbital, isovector M1 mode in these nuclei. Systematic photon scattering experiments have been performed on the deformed rare earth nuclei 156,158,160Gd, 160,162,164Dy, 172,174,176Yb, the 142,146,148,150Nd - isotopes, the deformed actinides 232Th, 236,238U, and the f-p shell nuclei 48Ti, 70,72Ge. Precise excitation energies, reduced transition probabilities, and unambiguous spin and partially parity assignments for numerous new states are presented. A systematics of the total B(M1)↑ strengths in rare earth nuclei exhibits a pronounced drop near A=165. The existence of the orbital M1 mode in the actinides is established. First results for the f-p shell nuclei 48Ti and 70,72Ge are reported. © 1990.
