THE FAKEABILITY OF THE 16-PF, MYERS-BRIGGS AND FIRO-B PERSONALITY MEASURES

Over 60 Ss completed three well-known, frequently used, personality questionnaires. The total number of respondents was split into three sub-groups and, based on a latin-square design, each group responded either honestly, faked good or faked bad to one of three personality questionnaires. The results indicated that all the measures were highly susceptible to distortion or faking especially the 16 PF and FIRO-B measure. Unlike the other two measures which showed a linear pattern of scores between fake good, control and fake bad many of the Myers-Briggs scales showed a curvilinear pattern. The results are discussed in terms of template of typical faking patterns, problems associated with measuring personality by self-report and methods of detecting dissimulators. © 1990.
