THE PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF NAPHTHACENE IN SOLUTION

摘要
Our interest in measuring the mobility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on various silica gel surfaces has led us to examine the products and kinetics of photochemistry of naphthacene both on these surfaces and in solution. In aerated solutions a single endoperoxide of naphthacene is formed, whereas in degassed solutions two dimers are formed. Both reactions in solution are found to be first order with respect to naphthacene, with peroxidation proceeding at a much greater rate than dimerization. The photoproducts obtained were examined spectroscopically. New nuclear magnetic resonance, UV-visible and mass spectroscopy data are presented for the peroxide of naphthacene and a mixture of the naphthacene dimers.
