Results are presented which suggest that CH3 species can be grafted onto a platinum surface from a hyperthermal (1-3 eV) CH3+ ion beam. An ion current greater than 100 nA for the low-energy CH3+ ion allows us to adsorb a significant fraction of a monolayer of adsorbate in less than 300 s, while maintaining an ultra-high vacuum environment science techniques, We detect the desorption of methane and hydrogen as the products from a platinum surface that had been dosed with the CH3+ ions.
