This is a bibliography-based review of silicone rubber in regard to its synthesis, chemistry, analysis, vulcanization, properties and applications. Polymer compositions include: phenyl containing; higher alkyls; fluorosilicones; cyanosiloxanes; hybrid siloxanes; carboranesiloxanes; grafted siloxanes; and miscellaneous compositions. Vulcanization covers: (1) activated cures, and (2) room-temperature vulcanization. Properties of vulcanized and virgin polymers that are discussed in some detail are: transitions; permeability and diffusion; adhesion, friction and other surface phenomena; mechanical properties, solubility and chemical resistance; high-temperature performance; electric properties. Application fields reviewed cover the following uses: industrial, scientific, and biomedical (prostheses, and others). State-of-the-art in 1978 concludes this comprehensive review-paper.
