SECONDARY NUCLEATION INDUCED BY THE CRACKING OF A GROWING CRYSTAL - KH2PO4(KDP) AND K(H,D)2PO4 (DKDP)

KH2PO4 (KDP) and K(H,D)2PO4 (DKDP) single crystals, 5-10 cm in size, were grown in conventional crystallizers with reversible crystal rotation at conventional (up to 1 mm/day) and elevated (up to 70 mm/day) growth rates. Growth of a perfect crystal was not accompanied by secondary nucleation, whereas cracks in the growing crystal were always follows by secondary crystals. Several runs in which secondary crystals appeared after sealing of flat inclusions were recorded. Models suggesting the secondary nucleation caused by crystal fragments produced during cracking or sealing of inclusion are proposed. Internal stresses in growing crystals due to lattice misfit between various neighbouring vicinal or conventional growth sectors are discussed and estimated. © 1990.
