Two related hypocholesteremic agents were administered, both singly and in combination, to rats and to monkeys. Analysis of the results in terms of chemical kinetic criteria provides, with more certainty than previously possible, a view of the mechanism by which the late stages of cholesterol biosynthesis are accomplished. Comparison of the structures and the different modes of action of the two agents illustrates the caution required in presuming that, when like structures exert like effects, they do so by the same mechanism. © 1968.
