High-pressure differential thermal analysis results are used to describe dehydroxylation reactions for the clay materials of kaolinite, Na-rich montmorillonite, and K-, Ca-, and Mg-exchanged montmorillonite. Sealed capsules may be used to contain fluids and it is possible to evaluate the role of H2O in these reactions. Furthermore, structural information is used with DTA data to develop atomistic models to understand these processes.
