IS CONSTRAINED LEISURE AN INTERNALLY HOMOGENEOUS CONCEPT - AN EXTENSION

This study expands upon portions of a study conducted by Jackson and Dunn (1991) that examined internal homogeneity in relation to perceptions of constrained leisure. A single sample of early adolescents was used to determine whether Jackson and Dunn's postulates regarding internal homogeneity could be replicated. Results indicated that although the number of early adolescents who perceived each item as a constraint between two aspects of non-participation was significantly different for each item, the strength, or relative importance of each item as a constraint was not significant. Thus, constraints for early adolescents appear to be internally dissimilar with respect to reasons for not participating in leisure activities, but internally homogeneous with respect to the perceived relative importance of that item as a constraint.
