IS THE ZERO-FIELD CRITICAL CURRENT-DENSITY A VALID CRITERION FOR SUPERCONDUCTING CERAMICS

Measurement of the critical currents of superconducting YBaCuO ceramic specimens of different sizes and shapes indicates that the resistanceless current is not proportional to the cross-sectional area, possibly because the current is concentrated at or near the surface. Consequently, it is not valid to use critical current densities to compare the merits of different specimens.
