AMPLIFICATION OF GUIDED ELASTIC WAVES IN PIEZOELECTRIC PLATES THROUGH ELECTRICAL COUPLING TO A SEMICONDUCTOR

Guided elastic waves in lead zirconate - titanate (PZT) and lithium niobate plates can be amplified acoustoelectrically by choosing the proper plate orientation and capacitively coupling the piezoelectric field into an adjacent semiconductor. To date, amplification has been observed for the first three flexural modes and the zero longitudinal and shear horizontal modes in PZT, as well as the first flexural and zero shear horizontal modes in lithium niobate. The strongest effect was found near the cutoff frequency of the F1 mode, with electronic gains in excess of 40 dB/cm at 4 MHz in PZT coupled to a plate of n-type silicon. © 1969 The American Institute of Physics.
