RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS IN SURGICAL PATIENTS

The increased incidence of patients with lung disease coming to surgery must be matched by an increased ability on the part of surgeons to both recognize them and properly prepare them for operation. Simple pulmonary function tests should be available as well as the equipment to carry out necessary pre- and postoperative therapy. Pulmonary complications can lead to respiratory failure, the treatment of which may be extremely difficult. A special care unit or recovery room with a full-time staff trained in the management of respiratory problems is essential to good postoperative care, and immediate blood gas analysis must be available at all times. © 1968.
