An electrolytic technique has been used to generate dilute (8-2000 × 10-6 M) liquid ammonia solutions of solvated electrons in the presence of varying concentrations of alkali metal iodides. The absorption spectra of these solutions have been determined in the region 200-2000 mμ, and the dependence of the position and intensity of the single broad absorption band at ∼1400 mμ on temperature, the concentration of solvated electrons, and the concentration of the metal salt has been investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the cavity model for the solvated electron.
