EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL-STUDY OF MECHANICAL-BEHAVIOR OF 1100-ALUMINUM IN THE STRAIN RATE RANGE 10(-5)-10(4)S(-1)

In this paper, a Direct Disc Impact technique is used to study the mechanical behavior of fully annealed 1100 aluminum and 1100-0 aluminum at high strain rates, while an MTS system is used to obtain the stress-strain curves of 1100-0 aluminum at low strain rates. The experimental results show that fully annealed 1100 aluminum is negligibly strain rate sensitive and its behavior at high strain rates can be described by Bell's parabolic equation, while 1100-0 aluminum is quite strain rate sensitive and a rate dependent theory has to be used to describe its behavior. A new viscoplastic model is then proposed which can predict the experimental results in a very large strain rate range, epsilon = 10(-5)-10(4) s-1, including the high work-harding region.
