ELECTRON PARAMAGNETIC RESONANCE OF CUPRIC ACETATE - IRRADIATION-INDUCED SPIN PAIRING

X-Irradiated crystals of cupric acetate monohydrate were investigated by epr at 77 and at 4.2°K. At both temperatures prominent spectra of a S = 1/2 species were obtained, indicating that the free spin produced by the irradiation in the ligand had paired with one of the spins in the Cu-Cu pair. Assuming cylindrical symmetry g and A components were evaluated by least-squares calculations on data taken from a single (arbitrary) crystal mounting position, giving g∥ = 2.458 ± 0.002, g⊥ = 2.075 ± 0.002, |A| = 435 ± 10 MHz, |B| ≃ 70 MHz.
