Dry compaction of ceramic powders has been widely studied in terms of the pressure/density relationship of the powder. However, the ceramist is interested not only in the density that will be obtained with a given powder and a given pressure, but also in the stress and density distribution in a given mold, with a given powder. This latter question may be answered with the help of a finite element code and a mechanical model of powder behavior. The purpose of this article is to describe the experimental determination of such a model and provide some examples of numerical calculations.
