The alloy investigated was DTD XXXA (8090) with a nominal composition - in weight-% - of Al-2. 5Li-1. 2Cu-0. 7Mg-0. 12Zr. The 25mm thick plate material had been solution heat treated, stretched and artificially aged to a T 651 condition. Investigations were also made on 2024 in a T 851 temper. The yield and tensile strengths of specimens tested in L- and T-direction are plotted versus thickness. The Li-containing alloy shows higher strength: the yield strength ranges from about 390 MPa (T) and 410 MPa (L) near the surface to about 470 MPa (T) and 480 MPa (L) in the center. The strength gradient is primarily due to texture hardening.
