ON THE MICROSTRUCTURAL EVOLUTION OF SINTERED BI-SR-CA-CU-O HIGH-TC SUPERCONDUCTORS

The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and AC magnetic susceptibility of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O samples has been carefully studied. A nominal starting composition of BiSrCaCu2Ox has been used together with sintering temperatures of 820, 860, 870, 880 and 890 degrees C. It has been shown that within the temperature range 860-880 degrees C small changes in temperature can profoundly influence the volume fraction of the phase with a Tc of 112 K which forms. At 890 degrees C samples have been found to partially melt and exhibit no superconducting transition above 60 K. Microstructural analysis has shown that Bi-containing, high-Tc phases are plate-like and closely interwoven in the microstructure. The compositions of the various phases has been determined semi-quantitatively using electron probe microanalysis, but the mechanism by which the higher-Tc phase grows from one of lower-Tc phases during sintering is not yet understood.
