The Human Genome Project has developed a detailed human genetic linkage map ahead of schedule. A physical map, consisting of overlapping pieces of DNA, is only slightly behind schedule. Base-by-base sequencing of the human genome is lagging but sequencing of model organisms is moving along very well, with the first eukaryotic genome likely to be completed soon. The importance and current status of the mapping and sequencing researches is elaborated upon in this article. A goal added recently to the Project strategic plan, which is the pursuit of a complementary DNA (cDNA) map, is discussed along with the controversy regarding cDNA commercialization. The ethical implications of the Human Genome Project are also examined.
