STABILITY ANALYSIS OF KIPPENHAHN-SCHLUTER MODEL OF SOLAR FILAMENTS

In this paper the stability of the Kippenhahn-Schlüter model of solar filaments against arbitrary perturbations is investigated. The problem is treated in the MHD approximation and a modification of the energy principle of Bernstein et al. is used. Two necessary and sufficient stability conditions are found: (a) [Bz] d Bx/d z ≧ 0 and (b) Bx d[Bz]/d z ≦ 0. Condition (a), in the limit of small currents, leads to the condition already discussed by Kippenhahn and Schlüter; condition (b) requires that the current density in the stable filament decreases with height. © 1969 D.
