GENOTYPIC RELATIONS BETWEEN GEOGRAPHIC ISOLATES OF CLADOPHORA-LAETEVIRENS AND CLADOPHORA-VAGABUNDA

The benthic green algae Cladophora vagabunda (L.) van den Hoek and C. laetevirens (Dillwyn) Kütz. have a wide distribution on the temperate and tropical coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The amount of DNA homology between geographic isolates of these species have been determined using DNA-DNA hybridization. The data indicate a close relationship between the isolates from the Mediterranean Sea and the North East Atlantic. Modest DNA divergence was observed between Atlantic and Australian isolates of C. laetevirens. North East Atlantic isolates of C. vagabunda have diverged considerably from Carribean and Australian isolates. Adaptation to environmental conditions may partly be responsible for this divergence. Almost no DNA homology was observed between C. vagabunda and C. laetevirens. It is suggested that an ecological barrier (temperature) is more restrictive to the geographic distribution of Cladophora species than geographic distance. © 1990, Walter de Gruyter.
