DOUBLE BETA-DECAY - COMPARISON OF THEORY TO EXPERIMENT

I review betabeta decay in the standard model and as a test of Majorana neutrino masses and right-handed couplings. A summary is given of some of the nuclear physics issues involved in evaluating 2nu and 0nu matrix elements. Dirac and pseudoDirac limits axe discussed to illustrate how quantities constrained in 0nu betabeta decay depend on the parameters of the mass matrix. Implications of 0nu betabeta decay for models with 17 keV neutrinos, for models with massive Majorana neutrinos, and for Majorons are discussed. It is argued that a recent remeasurement of the total betabeta decay rate of Te-128 is important in constraining (nonstandard) Majoron models.
