SPACE CHARGE DISPERSION OF DRIFTING BEAMS

The generally accepted solution for beam spreading due to space charge forces is reconsidered in this report. An exact, relativistic solution is obtained in the stationary frame of the beam (and transformed into the laboratory frame) as well as the direct electromagnetic solution in the laboratory frame. Departures from the universal beam spreading curve are noted; beam expansion is slightly larger than formerly given. © 1969.
