摘要
The solute flux into modern oceans is provided largely by continental runoff with a lesser contribution from sea-floor hydrothermal systems. Following the Hargraves model of crustal evolution it is proposed that as one goes back in time volcanogenic sources eventually predominate. This change is reflected in Sr-isotope and rare-earth patterns in sediments and by the nature and size of Archaen ore deposits. The evolution of complex life forms in ancient oceans may also have been inhibited by fluctuating high levels of toxic elements discharged from closely-spaced volcanic centres. © 1979.
