MAGNETOOPTICAL KERR EFFECT IN (TITANO) MAGNETITE, PYRRHOTITE AND HEMATITE

摘要
The successful application of the magneto-optical Kerr effect in rock magnetism is demonstrated. Domain structures of the most frequently occurring ferromagnetic minerals in rock-(titano)magnetite, pyrrhotite and hematite-are shown. Surprisingly, the method works with hematite, where the Bitter pattern technique is not appropriate. Skin depths and sublattice interactions are discussed to explain the effect.
