ELECTRON-MICROSCOPY STUDY OF THE INTERACTION OF NI, PD AND PT WITH CARBON .3. FORMATION OF A SUBSTITUTIONAL PT-C CARBIDE IN ULTRAFINE PLATINUM PARTICLES

Ultrafine platinum particles embedded in carbon were investigated by analytical and high resolution electron microscopy during heating in vacuum in the temperature range 875-1375 K. Between 1075 and 1175 K carbon atoms migrate into the Pt lattice and occupy the Pt sites after cooling to room temperature. As a result a substitutional, ordered Pt-C carbide of composition Pt3+xC1-x is formed. The Pt-C phase is metastable and decomposes in H-2 at 775 K or in vacuum at 1275 K. It is suggested that this phase provides an energetically favorable path for the graphitization of carbon.
