The paper presents the results of an experimental and theoretical study performed in order to aid assessments of the consequences associated with atmospheric venting of flammable gas at subsonic velocities. Three field scale releases of natural gas venting to atmosphere through a 300 mm diameter vent stack are considered. Measurements of the mean concentration field of a jet, obtained using a remote sensing laser system, are presented for a range of cross-wind to jet velocity ratios. The usefulness of a finite-difference model of a jet in a cross-flow for predicting the consequences associated with such releases is assessed by comparing model solutions with the field scale data. Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained provided the effect of large scale atmospheric turbulence in causing jet meandering is taken into account. © 1990, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
