摘要
A study of the red crab, Geryon tripinosus, in the Porcupine Seabight has revealed a striking depth related distribution, with a decrease in crab size with increasing depth. The data suggest that the species' breeding population is restricted to the upper levels of its total bathymetric range. Successful settlement of the post-larval stages appears to be concentrated at depths of 1000m or deeper, with a consequent up-slope ontogenetic migration of some tens of kilometres. Possible advantages of such as migration and the use of environmental cues for its orientation are discussed. © 1990.
