405 FEMALE 10TH GRADERS FILLED OUT A QUESTIONNAIRE ON THEIR VIEWS OF THE WOMAN'S ROLE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD GRADE COMPETITION. VERBAL ABILITY SCORES AND SCHOOL GRADES WERE ALSO OBTAINED. SS WERE DIVIDED ON VERBAL ABILITY SCORES, SEX-ROLE ORIENTATION, AND ACHIEVEMENT ATTITUDES IN A 2 * 2 * 2 FACTORIAL DESIGN WITH GRADES AS THE DEPENDENT VARIABLES. RESULTS INDICATED THAT, WHEN GROUPS ARE MATCHED FOR VERBAL ABILITY, IF MASCULINE COMPETITIVE BEHAVIOR IS SEEN AS APPROPRIATE TO THE FEMALE ROLE, THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACHIEVEMENT ATTITUDES AND SCHOOL GRADES.
