Somatostatin (SRIF) has been shown to have a variety of pharmacologic effects on endocrine and exocrine secretions as well as on neural activity and behavior;1 it also has wide tissue distribution.2-4 SRIF-like immunoreactivity (SRIF-LI) present in cerebrospinal fluid5 and urine6 has been measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA)3 and the characterization of human serum SRIF-LI has previously been presented by us in abstract form.7 In this paper we describe this characterization and report on human serum SRIF-LI following oral and intravenous glucose, oral beef extract (Oxo), and intravenous arginine; we also report the results of regional venous SRIF-LI in the rat both fasted and following oral and intravenous glucose. © 1978.
