Mobility and the free volume environments at different sites of a growing epoxy-diamine network (DGEBA-DDS) have been evaluated by site-specific labeling with azobenzene chromophores. The sites investigated are the cross-linker and the chain end or the dangling chain in the network. We also investigated the free volume of the least constrained region between the network chains by using a free probe not attached to the network. Trans yields cis photoisomerization kinetics of the two labels and the free probe were studied as a function of increasing cure at 160 degree C. Throughout the cure process, the photoisomerization kinetics can be analyzed by two rate processes, suggesting two distinct environments.
