RECOMBINATION PROCESSES IN SOLID TB AND DY AFTER 4D-] 4F RESONANT EXCITATIONS WITH SYNCHROTRON RADIATION

Recombination processes in solid terbium and dysprosium after 4d --> 4f giant resonance excitations have been studied using electron spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation (ESSR). Autoionization channels involving a 5s, 5p, or valence electron were found to be the dominating decay channels for photon energies corresponding to the low energy side of the giant resonance region. Especially autoionization through the 5p1/2, component was strong. In terbium also the N4,5O2,3N6,7 resonance Auger process was clearly seen, whereas in dysprosium it was weaker and more difficult to observe. Excitations corresponding to the main giant resonance decayed predominantly by autoionization via 4f orbital.
