The generality of independent-pair theory was explored and its instantaneous-normal-mode (INM) foundations critically assessed. A number of INM-based generalizations were used to study the transition between high- and low-frequency vibrational relaxation. The results show that vibrationally excited molecules will often take a profoundly myopic view of the solvent that surrounds them.
