The features of programmable automation controllers (PACs) and its potential applications in control and automation are discussed. PAC incorporates PLCs using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and PC systems incorporating real-time operating systems. The PC provides the software capabilities to perform advanced taks, offering a graphically rich programming and user environment. PACs represent the latest in programmable controller, providing solutions for advanced motion control, machine vision, data processing and very high speed control.
