摘要
It is suggested that in various stages of stellar evolution the generally neglected gravitational potential fluctuations, generated by convective density fluctuations, can induce mixing exterior to violent convection zones. Special consideration is given to stars undergoing a helium shell flash; especially in degenerate conditions. It is conjectured that the extent of some globular cluster horizontal branches is due not to stochastic mass loss on the red giant branch but, in large part, to stochastic and marginal forced mixing effects at the time of the helium flash. © 1980 Royal Astronomical Society.
