It appears that free corrosion of a Pd bearing alloy, leading to surface enrichment in Pd, can shift electro- chemical parameters favorably, such that passivation can be brought about. On the other hand, free corrosion of Ge and Re bearing alloys seems to cause electrochemical parameters to shift unfavorably, such that the tendence to passivate is reduced, and active corrosion rates are increased. From this, it appears that Ge and Re bearing Type 430 steels would show low corrosion rates only in solutions in which they passivated immediately upon immersion.
