A semiphenomenological analysis of cis-to-trans isomerization process of polyacetylene is presented. It is shown that an excitation of the cis-transoid form to the trans-cisoid form is necessary in the course of the isomerization. The probability of tunneling of a pi electron from trans-cisoid to cis-transoid state is estimated to be about 0. 7 per second. The life time of trans-cisoid form can be inferred to be several hours.
