In the article practical examples of improvements achieved by retrofitting of older alumina reduction cell lines are discussed. The plant retrofitting (use of new and advanced technology to upgrade an existing smelter) may be an interesting economic alternative to a complete conversion to new, modern cells. The new technology employed to retrofit old cells is: automatic alumina feeders; bath-chemistry modification; cathode design improvements; anode size modification; process control computerization.
