The scheduling of batch chemical facilities may be modeled as a generalized flowshop problem, for which the objective is to minimize the products' completion time. In particular, this paper examines the scheduling difficulties that arise if interstage storage is used within the production facility. A branch and bound solution procedure is presented which uses a simulation model to evaluate sequence completion times. An initial upper bound completion time is determined based on a heuristic scheduling rule.
