Several shapes composed of welded spheres pack in two dimensions were studied to understand how particle shape affects packings, and especially to identify two-dimensional random close-packed configurations. Ordered domains formed much more easily in two than in three dimensions. It was also observed that the rotational symmetry of a shape is an excellent predictor of how easily it orders and a potential guide to identifying two-dimensional shapes that remain random after annealing.
