Nanometer-size holes on a gold surface have been fabricated by a scanning tunnelling microscope. These nano holes move with velocities of 0.1 to 1 nm min-1. Strain fields induced by the perturbation of the surface are the primary driving force for the drift of holes. Coalescence of the holes was observed.
